Nintendo 2DS Announced, ANZ Date and Pricing Confirmed

Last night Nintendo announced that the next generation of the DS will be released in the US this Oct and will be called the 2DS. Unlike the current incarnation of Nintendo’s portable console the 2DS (as hinted at by the name) will not have 3D functionality but will be able to play 3DS games, another feature (or lack thereof) is this console does not fold like other DS’s, instead features a distinctive fixed, slate type form factor design and is being targeted at the entry level market. The 2DS will have all the other normal features you would expect for a DS console such as wireless, access to the eShop and compatibility with 3DS and DS games.

Due for release on October 12th for $129.99 in the US, there has been no official updates yet regarding a local release.

UPDATE: Nintendo Australia have confirmed today that the 2DS will launch in Australia on the same date as the US (October 12th) for AU $149.95/NZ $179.95. At launch we will have a choice of 2 colour combinations, White + Red or Black + Blue (plus matching carry cases available separately).
