OUYA: A new kind of console
The OUYA project on kickstarter is founded on the premise that with our technological advances, shouldn’t gaming be free?? It is intended as being the first true open gaming platform, based on Googles operating system Android – the same as the smartphones / tablets.
OUYA’s founders love their console games, and want their console to offer free to play games, to gamers the world over, by having developers offer a free to play version of any of their games with the option to upgrade or subscribe for a fee, thus giving developers the ability to still make money via the system. They are borrowing from the business model of games like League of Legends and Team Fortress 2, showing that free to play is still a fantastic way to go about making games, while still making a healthy profit.
The project on kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console) was targeting $950,000 over the course of the month for the project, and instead in the first two days of it being announced, it has received over $2 million worth of pledges.
Jump over to the page and have a look, it’s an amazing idea for a product, as well as being an open platform, it’s also open for tweaks and ‘hacking’ so if you can make it run better, you’re free to, something which other consoles lack without compromising your ability to play games.
Pledges into the project from some of our readers might go a long way, and you can pledge as little as $1 to help this become a reality, I know I will be doing a $99 pledge to get a console and controller upon release =)
